ESTABLISHMENT

Establishment

On September 4, 2023, His Majesty the King graciously granted the Exequatur to Nattapong Punthakeirtpaisarn as Honorary Consul, as proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia and approved by the Thai government. His consular jurisdiction covers Phuket and Phang Nga provinces. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand countersigned the Royal Command.

Objectives

Promote tourism between the two countries, especially encouraging Mongolian tourists to visit Phuket-Phang Nga, and creating opportunities for Thai people to experience nature and culture in Mongolia
Support economic cooperation such as trade, investment, exchanges in agriculture, livestock, renewable energy, and various industries
Create a platform for cultural exchange between Thailand and Mongolia through activities, exhibitions, arts, and meetings at both governmental and public levels
Serve as a coordination center to assist and protect Mongolian citizens in Phuket-Phang Nga

Significance

Thailand and Mongolia have maintained diplomatic relations for over 49 years, with cooperation in various areas including trade, investment, culture, and tourism
The establishment of the Honorary Consulate in Phuket represents an elevation of diplomatic relations between the two countries and symbolizes cooperation at the people-to-people level
The Consul also plays an important role in taking care of Mongolian tourists in the area, as well as building confidence and convenience for visitors

Thailand-Mongolia Relations

Diplomatic Relations

Thailand established diplomatic relations with Mongolia on March 5, 1974, designating the Royal Thai Embassy in Beijing to cover Mongolia, with the Ambassador to Beijing also serving as Ambassador to Ulaanbaatar. Initially, Mongolia appointed its Ambassador to Vientiane to also serve as Ambassador to Thailand. Later, on February 16, 2000, Mongolia opened its Embassy in Thailand, with Mr. Luvsandorj Bayart as the first Mongolian Ambassador. Relations between Thailand and Mongolia have generally proceeded smoothly.

Thailand and Mongolia strive to maintain interaction as a channel for continuous discussion and exchange of views. Thailand has consistently placed importance on providing mutual assistance in all areas between the two countries up to the present.

Economic Relations

Trade between Thailand and Mongolia has expanded continuously. Throughout 2011, the total trade value was 18.05 million US dollars, 30% higher than in 2010, consisting of 12.73 million US dollars in exports and 5.32 million US dollars in imports, increasing by 32.64% and 26.17% respectively from 2010. Between January-September 2013, the total trade value was 12.04 million US dollars, an increase of 24.96%, while in 2012, the total trade value was 13.69 million US dollars (Thailand exported 13.23 million US dollars and imported 0.46 million US dollars). Thailand’s major export items include automobiles, equipment and parts, paper and paper products, aluminum products, refrigerators, freezers and components. Thailand’s major import items include metal ores, metal scraps, minerals and mineral products, ready-made clothing, tea, coffee, and spices.
